If the liquid limit cannot be determined the soil is considered to be non-plastic and the plastic limit need not be determined.(b) If a liquid limit value has been determined, perform the plastic limit in accordance with AS 1289.3.2.1 ensuring that the same method of preparation of the soil for the liquid limit and plastic limit has been followed.ON4 CALCULATI −Using the reported values of wL and wP, calculate the plasticity index (IP) from thefollowing equation:© Standards AustraliawhereIP = wL wPAS 1289.3.3.1—2009IP = plasticity index, in percent.wL = liquid limit, in percent.wP = plastic limit, in percent.AS 1289.3.3.1—2009 25 TEST REPORTThe following shall be reported:(a) The plasticity index (IP), in percent, when both the liquid limit and the plastic limit are determined.(b) When the liquid limit or the plastic limit cannot be determined, report the plasticity index as NP (i.e., non-plastic), together with the liquid or plastic limit, if either has been determined.(c) When the plastic limit is equal to or greater than the liquid limit, report the plasticity index as 0 (zero) and also report both the liquid limit and the plastic limit.(d) The method used to determine the liquid limit, i.e., AS 1289.3.1.1 or AS 1289.3.1.2. (e) Method of preparation and the history of the sample.(f) Reference to this method, i.e., AS 1289.3.3.1.© Standards Australiawww.standards.org.au3 AS 1289.3.3.1—2009NOTESAS 1289.3.3.1—2009 4This Australian Standard® was prepared by Committee CE-009, Testing of Soils for Engineering Purposes. To maintain their currency, all Standards are periodically reviewed, and new editions are published. Between editions, amendments may be issued. Standards may also be withdrawn. It is important that readers assure themselves they are using a current Standard, which should include any amendments which may have been published since the Standard was purchased.Detailed information about Standards can be found by visiting the Standards Web Shop at .au and looking up the relevant Standard in the on-line catalogue. We also welcome suggestions for the improvement in our Standards, and especially encourage readers to notify us immediately of any apparent inaccuracies or ambiguities.
