如 ：　　I was wondering whether you could help me do something on our wedding.　　 这 是 一 句 非 常 礼 貌 的 话 ， 比 “ Could you help me do something on our wedding?"要 客 气 得 多 它 用 的 是 过 去 进 行 时 ， 表 达 的 意 思 却 是 现 在 这 句 话 可 以 翻 译 成 ： “ 不 知 能 否 劳 驾 您 在 我 们 婚 礼 上 帮 我 做 点 事 情 ？ ” 　　如 果 我 们 沿 用 传 统 的 时 态 概 念 ， 把 这 句 话 改 成 后 者 ， 那 么 ， 整 句 话 的 语 气 大 变 ， 显 得 生 硬 更 遭 的 是 ， 句 子 产 生 了 两 种 负 面 意 义 ： 我 不 知 道 你 帮 不 帮 我 做 这 件 事 ； 对 你 否 帮 我 做 这 事 ， 我 持 怀 疑 态 度 而 用 过 去 进 行 时 ， 则 不 会 产 生 以 上 错 误 理 解 　　 4.2 一 些 情 态 动 词 或 其 他 动 词 的 过 去 时 也 用 来 表 示 委 婉 语 气 ， 实 际 上 是 虚 拟 语 气 ， 表 假 设 、 愿 望 、 建 议 、 猜 测 、 怀 疑 而 已 。
