A(2021·潍坊高二检测)More than one million single-use straws (吸管), most of them plastic, are used in the United States each day. They end up in waterways, harm sea animals, and break down into micro-plastic. Quantities of places have passed plastic-straw bans as a way to start handling the global plastic waste problem. Straw materials: advantages and disadvantages Metal Made of stainless steel, aluminum, or even titanium, metal straws have become popular. They draw some criticism for having a metallic taste and conducting heat from a hot drink, but they’re strong and can be reused. Paper Paper drinking straws, which date from the late 1800s, often absorb liquid over time and can leave a taste or fibers in drinks. They’re the most popular throwaway choice in places with plastic-straw bans. Glass Though glass straws may be more breakable and thus less portable than reusable straws of other materials, they hold up well to washing and reuse. Some straws are made to look artistic, with colors and blown-glass designs. Bamboo This natural material can be sustainably produced and is a plant-based replacement of plastic straws. Bamboo straws are easily disposed of and turned into fertilizer. They are reusable but can be hard to clean completely and may absorb flavors. 【文章大意】本文是一篇说明文。

Not long after that, he decided to dedicate(献身) his life to this effort, so he moved to the site in order that he could work full-time creating a new forest ecosystem. Unbelievably, the spot today hosts a sprawling(蔓延的) 1360 acres of jungle that Payeng single-handedly planted. The Times of India recently caught up with Payeng in his remote forest cottage to learn more about how he came to leave such an unbelievable mark on the landscape. It all started way back in 1979, when floods washed a large number of snakes ashore on the sandbar. One day after the floods, Payeng, only 16 then, found the place dotted with the dead snakes. That was the turning point of his life. “The snakes died in the heat without any tree cover. I sat down and wept over their lifeless bodies. I asked the forest department if they could grow trees there. They said nothing would grow there. Instead, they asked me to try growing bamboo. It was painful, but I did it. There was nobody to help me. Nobody was interested, ” says Payeng, now 47. While it’s taken years for Payeng’s remarkable dedication to planting to receive some well-deserved recognition internationally, it didn’t take long for wildlife in the region to benefit from the forest. Demonstrating a keen understanding of ecological balance, Payeng even transplanted ants to his ecosystem to maintain its natural harmony. Soon the shadeless sandbar was transformed into a natural ecosystem. The forest, called the Molai woods, now serves as a safe habitat for numerous birds, deer, rhinos, tigers and elephants. Despite Payeng’s outstanding project, forestry officials in the region first learned of this new forest in 2008, and since then they’ve come to recognize his efforts as truly remarkable, but perhaps not enough. “We’re amazed at Payeng, ” says Gunin Saikia, Assistant Conservator of Forests. “He has been at it for 30 years. Had he been in any other country, he would have been made a hero. ” 【文章大意】这是一篇新闻报道类文体, 主要介绍了Payeng付出了30年的努力和汗水, 创造了一个新的森林生态系统来保护环境。

But if you had been there around 15, 000 years ago, during the last ice age, would it have been the same? For more than 30 years, scientists have been arguing about how rainforests might have reacted to the cold, dry climate of the ice ages, but till now, no one has reached a satisfying answer. Rainforests like the Amazon are important for mopping up CO2 from the atmosphere and helping to solve global warming. Currently the trees in the Amazon take in around 500 million tons of CO2 each year: equal to the total amount of CO2 given off in the UK each year. But how will the Amazon react to the future climate change? If it gets drier, will it survive and continue to draw down CO2? Scientists hope that they will be able to learn in advance how the rainforest will manage in the future by understanding how rainforests reacted to climate change in the past. Unfortunately, collecting information is incredibly difficult. To study the past climate, scientists need to look at fossilized pollen (花粉) kept in lake mud. Going back to the last ice age means drilling down into lake sediment (沉淀物), which requires specialized equipment and heavy machinery. There are very few roads and paths, or places to land helicopters and aeroplanes. Rivers tend to be the easiest way to enter the forest, but this still leaves vast areas between the rivers completely unsampled (未取样). So far, only a handful of cores have been drilled that go back to the last ice age and none of them provides enough information to prove how the Amazon forest reacts to climate change. 【文章大意】本文是一篇环境类的短文阅读。
